  Surgeon, Joseph A. Smith, Jr., MD
Chairman, Department of Urologic Surgery Vanderbilt University Medical Center

Dr. Smith completed his surgery training at University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, his urology residency at the University of Utah, and a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He currently is the William L. Bray Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urologic Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Smith is President of the American Board of Urology, President of the Southeastern Section of the American Urological Association, Past-President of the Society of Urologic Oncology, Chair of the Prostate Health Council of the American Foundation for Urologic Disease and prior Chair of the Residency Review Committee for urology. His clinical practice has focused on innovative treatment methods and surgical approaches for the management of urologic cancers.

Assistant Professor of Urologic Surgery Director, Laparoscopic Urologic Surgery and Robotics

Dr. Herrell completed his surgical training and urologic surgery residency at the University of Virginia, and his fellowship in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery at Loyola University in Chicago in 1997. He developed successful programs in laparoscopic urologic surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of Kansas before being recruited to Vanderbilt by Dr. Smith to serve as director of Laparoscopic Urologic Surgery and robotics. He is Chair of the Vanderbilt Robotic Surgery Committee which directs training and accreditation for robotic surgery. Dr. Herrell serves as director of a specialized fellowship in laparoscopic surgery and robotics. He performed the first laparoscopic non-robotic prostatectomies in Tennessee. With Vanderbilt's acquisition of robotic technology, he performed the initial large series of RALP procedures with Dr. Smith. Currently, he also performs the robotic prostatectomy procedure on a routine basis. Dr. Herrell has served as an expert on-site instructor at hospitals and universities throughout the country for other urologic surgeons learning the robotic prostatectomy procedure and has lectured nationally and internationally on laparoscopy and robotics. His clinical focus in on laparoscopic and robotic surgery for renal and prostate cancer. In his laboratory, he directs studies on new methods to preserve nerves using new drugs and specialized instruments along with research on new treatments for renal cancer and innovative technology for minimally invasive surgery.
