Surgeon,
Daniel E. Gelb, MD
Daniel E. Gelb, MD, is an assistant professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and co-director of the University of Maryland Spine Center. Recently, he was named vice chairman of Orthopaedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Orthopaedics.
Dr. Gelb's medical training began with a medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine, followed by a residency in orthopaedic surgery from the University of Rochester, New York. He completed his fellowship focusing on the spine at Washington University in St. Louis. He also participated in the Yves Cotrel Fellowship for the study of the spine in Paris, France.
Previously, Dr. Gelb spent six years as assistant professor of orthopaedics at Penn State University College of Medicine and was a surgeon at Hershey Medical Center.
His clinical interests include disc replacement, minimally invasive spine surgery, spinal infections, deformity and osteoporosis. Dr. Gelb's research interests include Osteoporosis and Outcomes on the Long-term outcomes of adult deformity surgery.

Surgeon, Steven C. Ludwig, MD
Steven C. Ludwig, MD, is an assistant professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and co-director of the University of Maryland Spine Center. An expert in spine surgery, he is also an orthopaedic surgeon at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
After receiving his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Dr. Ludwig completed an internship in general surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital-Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He continued his training with a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the combined program through Thomas Jefferson University-Jefferson Medical College and Pennsylvania Hospital - Rothman Institute, followed by a fellowship in spine surgery at Emory University's department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Ludwig joined the orthopeadic team at the University of Maryland Medical Center in 2002 when he came to Baltimore from Hershey, Pennsylvania where he had been an orthopaedic surgeon at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He was also an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Penn State College of Medicine.
Dr. Ludwig has a special interest in spine reconstructive surgery, spinal stenosis, degenerative conditions of the spine, spine tumors, and minimally invasive spine procedures.

Moderator, Vincent D. Pellegrini, Jr., MD
Vincent D. Pellegrini, Jr., MD, a renowned hand surgeon and expert in total joint replacement, is the James L. Kernan Professor and chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore and chief of Orthopaedics at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Dr. Pellegrini came to the University of Maryland from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, where he was professor and chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. From 1986 to 1992, he was on the faculty of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Dr. Pellegrini oversees orthopaedic research, education and patient care at the University of Maryland Medical Center (which includes the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center) and Kernan Hospital. His department also includes the orthopaedic surgeons who are the team physicians for the University of Maryland College Park.
Dr. Pellegrini received his M.D. from Dartmouth Medical School and a B.A. from Dartmouth College. He completed his residency in surgery at the Hartford Hospital and after pursuing a residency in orthopaedics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry / Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, Dr Pellegrini served as chief resident and completed a fellowship in surgery of the hand and upper extremity at the University of Rochester/Strong Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Pellegrini is a member of the Orthopaedic Research Society, the Osteoarthritis Research Society, Hip Society, and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. He has received numerous awards, including the John Charnley Award from the Hip Society and the Sterling Bunnell Traveling Fellowship from the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
Adult reconstructive/joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee and hand/upper extremity surgery are areas of clinical interest and expertise. Research interests include thromboembolic disease, the control of heterotopic ossification after hip replacement, osteonecrosis, and causative factors in osteoarthritis of the hand.
