Kenneth G. MacDonald, MD
Chief of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Surgical Endoscopy at the Brody School of Medicine at ECU.
Dr. Kenneth G. MacDonald, chief of gastrointestinal surgery and surgical endoscopy at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, also serves as governor of the American College of Surgeons. He is a past president of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons (ASBS), and serves on the ethics and bylaws committees and the executive council of the ASBS. MacDonald also is a member of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity. He has presented his research at more than 130 conferences, both nationally and internationally.

William H. Chapman, III, MD
Director of the Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery Center, Assistant Director of the Bariatric Surgery Fellowship Program at ECU.
Dr. William H. Chapman, III, director of the Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery Center and assistant director of the Bariatric Surgery Fellowship Program at ECU, is the first surgeon to perform a robotic adrenalectomy, which is the removal of one or both adrenal glands. He also is one of the first surgeons ever to perform a robotic splenectomy, which is the removal of the spleen. Additionally, he helped to establish the Minimally Invasive Surgery Program at PCMH and helped to rebuild the PCMH operating rooms to accommodate minimally invasive surgery. Chapman also is on the editorial board of Current Surgery.

Christian Mann, MD
General Surgeon Southern Surgical Associates
Dr. Chris Mann, general surgeon with Southern Surgical Associates in Greenville, is a native of Germany and graduated from the University of Heidelberg Medical School. He completed his final year of medical school at the Duke University Medical Center through a scholarship exchange program. After obtaining his medical license in Germany, he returned to North Carolina where he completed residency in general surgery at East Carolina University under Dr. Walter Pories and Dr. Randolph Chitwood. Following his residency training, he completed additional fellowship training in laparoscopic surgery in New York. Dr. Mann’s area of expertise is general surgery with an emphasis on laparoscopic and minimally invasive procedures including hernia repair, anti-reflux surgery, gallbladder and biliary surgery and colon surgery.

Wade Naziri, MD
General Surgeon Southern Surgical Associates
Dr. Wade Naziri, general surgeon with Southern Surgical Associates in Greenville, completed general surgery residency at Tulane University School of Medicine and received fellowship training in laparoscopic surgery at the University of Dandee School of Medicine in Scotland under one of the leaders in the field, Dr. Alfred Cushieri. His areas of expertise and interest include laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery including gallbladder surgery, anti-reflux surgery, hernia repair, and colon surgery. He also has special interest in weight loss surgery and was successful in helping establish his practice as one of the Centers of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery as designated by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina.

John R. Pender IV, MD
Clinical Assistant Professor, Division of Laparoscopy and Bariatric Surgery, Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University
Dr. John R. Pender IV, clinical assistant professor in the Division of Laparoscopy and Bariatric Surgery at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, serves on the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons. He, along with Dr. Deiter Bruno, helped to develop the Robotic and Advanced Laparoscopic Urologic Surgery Program at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. His professional interests include laparoscopic/robotic surgery of the gastrointestinal tract, the surgical treatment of obesity and endocrine disorders, and resident education.

Walter J. Pories, MD
Chief of the Metabolic Institute, Professor of Surgery and Biochemistry, East Carolina University
Dr. Walter J. Pories, chief of the Metabolic Institute and professor of surgery and biochemistry at East Carolina University, currently serves as the president of the North Carolina Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and the North Carolina Surgical Association, and as a governor of the American College of Surgeons. He is the founding chairman of the Department of Surgery at the Brody School of Medicine at ECU, former chief of surgery at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, and a former president of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and the Association for Program Directors in Surgery. He also serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Surgical Review Corporation. Pories is the Principal Investigator of the National Institutes of Health-funded, ECU National Center for the Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery, one of only six sites in the country. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Current Surgery, and sits on the editorial boards of Obesity Surgery and Obesity Research. He has published about 400 articles, 60 book chapters and 90 medical cartoons.
