Le Bonheur's Child focused Surgery Program

Bernard the Puppet   Bernard

Bernard, Le Bonheur's hospital puppet, helps children learn about surgery through hands-on experience. The children dress up as surgeons and take their patient, Bernard, to the Bunny Room, the pre-operative room, the surgery suite and the recovery room. During the process, the children play out the events of surgery, including using a real anesthesia mask to place Bernard into a "magic, special sleep." Participation in this program helps reduce the child's fear of the unknown by giving them a better understanding of what he or she will experience as a patient. This makes the surgery process a lot easier on the parent and the child.

Before surgery, there's one thing every child must do - hop to the Bunny Room to pick out a special toy. The Bunny Room is the only way to get into the pre-operative holding area and gives the child a positive experience to begin his or her surgical experience. The child picks out a toy in the Bunny Room and takes it to surgery. The toy is waiting for the child when he or she awakes from surgery. Everything we do at Le Bonheur is designed to make the parent and child feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible. Special features such as the Bunny Room are just one way Le Bonheur seeks to treat the whole child.
