Surgeon, Vincent Gaudiani, MD

Cardiac Surgeon
Sequoia Hospital
Redwood City, CA

Dr. Vincent Gaudiani is the senior cardiac surgeon in the group. Over the past twenty years he has performed approximately seven thousand cardiac operations and has focused his interest on the more difficult and complex problems of operable heart disease in adults. In the early 1980s he had the opportunity to help in the development of automatic internal defibrillators (AICD) and has performed more than six hundred electrophysiology operations. At present he is using the Cox Maze operation to treat atrial fibrillation. Later in the '80s he began to develop expertise in mitral valve repair and has now operated on more than five hundred such cases. Dr. Gaudiani maintains a keen interest in other aspects of valvular heart disease and left ventricular outflow tract reconstruction and he currently operates on about two hundred valve patients each year. More recently, the trend towards less invasive procedures has led him to perform more than one hundred valve operations through small incisions.

His interest in unusual cases also extends to coronary bypass surgery. The current statistics of the California Society of Thoracic Surgeons reveal that he performs an unusually large number of operations for coronary disease on patients who have had previous operations. Such patients often require radial artery grafts, coronary endarterectomy, and other advanced techniques.

Dr. Gaudiani received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and his medical training at Case Western Reserve University, the National Institutes for Health, and Stanford University. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is a consultant to the Heart Valve division of Medtronic.

Moderator, Luis J. Castro, MD

Cardiac Surgeon
Sequoia Hospital
Redwood City, CA

Dr. Luis J. Castro is originally from Los Angeles and joined the group as a cardiac surgeon in 1998. His areas of special interest and expertise include complex coronary artery procedures (both on and "off-pump"), as well as aortic valve reconstruction. He continues to incorporate the application of new technology to achieve outstanding results at or better than the state and national averages. His innovative strategies for aortic root reconstruction have been presented nationally and published in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery. He and Dr. Gaudiani continue to perform the majority aortic and mitral valve operations through limited incisions.

Dr. Castro graduated from Stanford Medical School and completed his surgical training at both Stanford and the University of Southern California. He is board certified by and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also fluent in Spanish.
