Hartford, CT-Interventional radiologists at Hartford Hospital performed a procedure on a woman suffering from painful uterine fibroids in a live internet broadcast first seen on November 16th, 2005 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 pm EDT. Dr. Michael Hallisey performed the procedure. Drs. Domenic Zambuto, and John Greene, Co-Director of Women’s Health at Hartford Hospital moderated the event.
For 40 percent of women over 40, uterine fibroids are troublesome growths that can interfere with daily life by causing excessive bleeding, pain, or pressure on the bladder. Now a new minimally invasive approach called uterine artery embolization treats the condition by starving the fibroid of blood supply, avoiding the need for hysterectomy. Hartford Hospital physicians performed a live embolization by inserting tiny plastic particles through a catheter to plug the blood vessels leading to the tumor.
