LIVE "Mini" Hip Replacement
First Seen: Wednesday, December 3, 2003
Hartford, CT –
Painfully worn-out hips are a by-product of diseases such as osteoarthris, rheumatoid arthritis, and congenital anormalities of the hip joint. One of the wonders of modern medicine was the development of a hip replacement procedure in which the old ball and socket are replaced with artificial (metal and plastic) components, eliminating pain and allowing sufferers to walk with ease again. Until very recently, though, hip replacements were a massive procedure, involving 10- to 18-inch incisions, extensive blood loss and a lengthy recovery period. Now, surgeons at Hartford Hospital have perfected the "mini" hip replacement, requiring only a 3-4-inch incision. The result: less pain and more rapid recovery. On December 3, Dr. Steven Schutzer performed a "mini" hip replacement LIVE over the Internet, demonstrating this remarkable procedure for physicians and lay people alike.
