About the Physicians and Staff

Richard Sadler, M.D., FACS

Cardiothoracic surgeon Richard Sadler, M.D., FACS, Chest & Vascular Surgery, P.C., has been on the medical staff at Genesis since 1989. He also is founder and past Medical Director of Med-Force, a regional air ambulance service. Dr. Sadler is a Diplomate, American Board of Thoracic Surgery, American Board of Surgery Added Qualifications in Vascular Surgery, American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Preventive Medicine – Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine. He is a certified instructor in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. In addition, Dr. Sadler is certified in neonate resuscitation and is a National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration certified Diving Medical Officer.

Dr. Sadler received his undergraduate degree from Virginia Military Institute and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He did his surgical internship at University of Southern California – LA County Hospital; his general surgery residency at University of California, Irvine; and this thoracic and vascular surgical residencies at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Afzal (Erik) Abdullah, M.D.

Erik Abdullah, M.D., is a Vascular & Thoracic Associates, Ltd. surgeon on staff at Genesis Medical Center. He received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and his medical degree from Georgetown University. His surgical internship and residency were completed at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. Additionally, he completed a vascular surgery fellowship at University of Tennessee Medical Center, Memphis.

Dr. Abdullah served in the military for 9 years, leaving at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. His assignments included: Battalion Surgeon, 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, United States Marine Corps, Okinawa, Japan; Resident, Department of Surgery, National Naval Medical Center; General Surgeon, Fleet Surgical Team Two, Little Creek, Va.; and Department of Surgery and Critical Care, Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Va.
