Marshfield, WI-Carotid artery stenting is a new, less invasive treatment option for the prevention of stroke in patients with carotid artery disease. On Tuesday, December 6, from noon – 1 pm (CST) Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Marshfield Clinic will hosted a live webcast featuring Marshfield Clinic physicians Timothy Swan, MD, an interventional radiologist and chair of the Department of Radiology; and Marvin Kuehner, MD, a vascular surgeon; as well as Robert Bohl, a nurse practitioner in Marshfield Clinic’s Department of Neurology. They provided expert commentary throughout the broadcast, which included a pre-taped segment demonstrating the carotid artery stenting procedure, and fielded questions from the Internet audience.
Traditionally, most blockages in the carotid artery, a major supplier of blood to the brain, have been treated with the surgical procedure called carotid endarterectomy in which surgeons expose the carotid artery in the neck to remove the blockage. In carotid artery stenting, a physician uses a combination of balloon angioplasty and a stent, a small metal mesh tube, to unblock and reopen the artery from within the vessel itself. When compared to the surgical procedure, this therapy has demonstrated to have lower rate of death, myocardial infarction and stroke in high risk patients.
More than 75 carotid artery stent procedures have been performed at Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation is the only organization in Wisconsin participating in a National Institutes of Health-sponsored study examining the effectiveness of carotid artery stenting in patients considered “normal” risk.
